Deepfake Technology

Deepfake technology refers to a type of artificial intelligence (AI) that generates realistic but artificially created content, particularly videos and audio recordings. It uses machine learning algorithms, especially deep learning techniques, to manipulate or synthesize visual and auditory media. The name “deepfake” combines “deep learning,” a subset of AI that relies on neural networks, with “fake,” indicating the deceptive nature of the content produced.

Deepfake technology can create realistic portrayals of people saying or doing things they never actually did, by superimposing one person’s likeness onto another’s performance. This has raised significant ethical and societal concerns, particularly regarding misinformation, privacy violations, and the potential for malicious use in impersonation or defamation. While deepfakes can also have positive applications in entertainment and education, their ability to deceive poses challenges for trust in digital media.
